Ashleigh Banfield is a Canadian-American television host working for NewsNation as the host of Banfield airing on weeknights at 10 p.m. ET. She joined the NewsNation news team in January 2021, after previously working for Court TV.
Ashleigh Banfield Education
Banfield attended Balmoral Hall School, which is a private university preparatory school in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She graduated from Balmoral Hall School in 1985 and later joined Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. She studied political science and French at Queen’s University and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1988. In addition, she also attended the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, British Columbia where she studied French and graduated in 1992.

Her journalism career started at CJBN-TV in Kenora, Ontario in 1988, and in the same year, she worked for CKY-TV in Winnipeg. Later on, Ashleigh worked for CFRN-TV in Edmonton from 1989 to 1992 where she served as a weekend anchor. In addition, from 1992 to 1993, Banfield served as a producer for CICT-TV in Calgary. While still working for CICT-TV, she also served as a business correspondent and evening anchor from 1993 to 1995. Furthermore, in 1994, Ashleigh won two Iris Awards in the categories of Best of Festival and Best News Documentary.
While working at CICT-TV, Banfield also served as a freelance associate producer for ABC’s World News Tonight. In her role, she covered the April 1993 Clinton/Yeltsin Summit in Vancouver and the 1991 Bush/Gorbachev Summit in Russia.
United States TV Career
Ashleigh worked for the Dallas broadcast station KDFW-TV where she served as a reporter and while she was at the station, she won an Emmy award. Later in the early 2000’s, she secured a job at MSNBC where she served as an anchor and reporter. While at MSNBC, Banfield also served as the host of the station’s investigative show. In addition, she has also worked for NBC News and served as the host of HomePage along with Gina Gaston and Mika Brzezinski.
Furthermore, Banfield reported from the streets of Manhattan on September 11, 2001, during a cloud of debris from the collapsing World Trade Center. The 7 World Trade Center collapsed behind her while she reported a couple of blocks north of the site. The World Trade Center attacks took two of her friends thus she sought help for post-traumatic stress disorder. She had the opportunity to visit a hospital in Kabul and interview Taliban prisoners during the Afghanistan conflict.
Later on, she was in Pakistan where she interviewed Father Gregory Rice, who is a Roman Catholic priest in the area, and interviewed an Iraqi woman aiding refugees. Ashleigh raised concerns during a Landon Lecture Series speech at Kansas State University in April 2003. Her concerns were around the media coverage of the conflict in Iraq.
In 2005, Ashleigh joined CourtTV as the co-host of Banfield & Ford: Courtside, a weekday show airing from 1 pm to 3 pm alongside Jack Ford. She took over as the host of the truTV series Open Court on June 1, 2009, the show aired from 9 am to 11 am.

In addition, she later joined CNN in January 2012, where she served as a weekday morning co-anchor alongside Zoraida Sambolin. She shifted to working on the weekday 11 am newscast on August 13, 2012, thus replacing Kyra Phillips as anchor. After CNN announced its rebranding for the 11-hour newscast on August 6, 2013, the introduced a show known as Legal View that Ashleigh hosted. Furthermore, she was featured in the Netflix series House of Cards in 2014. In the series, she took up a small role in interviewing Claire Underwood.
Not long after, she joined HLN where she served as the host of Primetime Justice, which is a legal issues interview program airing Monday to Thursday at 8 p.m. Banfield became the host of the A&E show Live Rescue on October 26, 2018, and after hosting the first season, Matt Iseman took over her role
