Katz earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin–Madison (1990) and began working for ESPN in 2000. As a senior in high school in 1985, Katz began his career in sports journalism by calling plays for Newton North and Newton South High School games. Later, while in college, he worked at The Daily Cardinal, Wisconsin State Journal, and Milwaukee Journal. Prior to joining ESPN, Katz covered sports for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (1989–1990), the Albuquerque Journal (1990–1995), and The Fresno Bee (1995–1999).

A memorable incident involving Katz at ESPN occurred when he mispronounced “bulging discs” while covering the 2012 NBA Draft. As part of ESPN’s coverage of the US presidential election in 2008, he wrote about Barack Obama’s passion for basketball. This led to eight episodes of “Barack-etology” while Obama was president. Additionally, he served as Bob Ley’s main backup on ESPN’s sports investigative journalism program Outside The Lines. Katz was one of the more than 100 employees that ESPN let go on April 26, 2017.
