Andrea Mitchell Health

Journalist Mitchell, aged 78, detected her breast cancer early through a routine mammogram in 2011. In response to her diagnosis, she opted for a mastectomy (the removal of the breast) and later underwent delayed breast reconstruction as part of her cancer treatment. Advocating for early detection, she has become an advocate for raising awareness about breast cancer. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that women with an average risk of breast cancer begin screening at the age of 40. However, for those with higher risks due to factors such as the BRCA gene mutation, family history of cancer, or dense breasts, individualized discussions with healthcare providers are crucial to determine the appropriate screening timeline, which may involve starting earlier than the age of 40. Dr. Andrea Pusic, Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital highlights that breast reconstruction plays a vital role in restoring a woman’s physical form and sense of self after mastectomy.

Various options and techniques are available for breast reconstruction, including immediate procedures conducted at the time of mastectomy or delayed procedures that may take place months or even years later. Veteran journalist Mitchell revealed that she postponed breast reconstruction after her cancer diagnosis to continue covering a presidential campaign. Expressing her eagerness for the prolonged campaign to conclude so she could focus on her breast cancer treatment, she acknowledged the personal sacrifices made during that time. Despite the challenges, she emphasizes the life lesson she learned about the importance of early detection through her unexpected cancer journey. Her experience serves as a testament to the significance of timely detection and prioritizing one’s health.
