Finney earned a Bachelor of Science in Radio and Television from Arkansas State University and a Master of Arts in Communication and Media Studies from Southern New Hampshire University. Andrea began her career at KATV Channel 7 News. There, she served as host of “The Morning Juice,” where she discussed a variety of subjects, including the most recent developments in entertainment news and the debate over religious freedom laws in Indiana and Arkansas. It was not until the Mother Emmanual AME Church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, that she realized her calling was to tell stories that have an impact on the lives of regular people.
Although districts, conferences, and areas already connect the AME Church, Andrea claims to have witnessed the pinnacle of connectionality when members of her church in the 12th District extended their love and support to those in the 7th District. Andrea connected reporters to the bishop of the 12th District, local African Methodist Episcopalians, and even other African Methodists who knew the deceased members in Charleston as her news station attempted to cover the devastating blow from a local perspective.
When gun laws came up for discussion once more, Andrea claims that it was on Channel 7 that she first developed a passion for politics, policy, and how these things affect regular people’s lives. According to her, she always knew she wanted to work as a reliable journalist who separates fact from fiction and shows people what’s really going on in the world.
In 2016, when KTBS First News hired her as a general reporter, Andrea claims it was an eye-opening experience that she was sent to cover the August 2016 floods in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on her third day of work. Though the floods completely destroyed businesses and neighborhoods, she witnessed poverty-stricken conditions growing up. Watching from boats, she and her photographer documented the efforts of ordinary citizens and emergency personnel to save others from their homes.
In addition to witnessing many tears as people tried to figure out what to do after losing everything, Andrea claims she also heard tales from people who traveled from other parts of the state just to offer assistance. At Red Cross shelters, she witnessed hundreds of people sleeping on makeshift cots and people wading through water to try to salvage anything that could be salvaged from their businesses. Andrea says it only made her appreciate the chance to show others what was going on and inspire them to help even more.
While Andrea was the 9 a.m. and noon news anchor, she also frequently engaged with the leaders of her local community. She invited congressmen, state leaders, and city council members to discuss how new laws and policies would impact the public, and she made an effort to highlight events that benefited the locals in the interviews she did for her shows.
As the primary anchor for News Channel Five, Andrea honed her investigative skills by reporting on government assistance program fraud, exposing waste amounting to tens of millions of dollars, removing thousands of participants from the program, and reforming the Medicaid application process. She saw firsthand the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on both local and national populations while working as the weekend anchor for CBS 21 News.
