Amy K. Nelson is an American lawyer, author, photographer, entrepreneur, freelance journalist and co-founder and CEO of Riveter.
Nelson’s early interest in politics led her to actively engage in political campaigns, where she went door-to-door advocating for various causes. Beginning her career as a nanny and later working as a waitress, she pursued a Bachelor’s degree in International Studies at Emory University. During her college years, she interned at the Carter Center and transitioned into a full-time position with the organization upon graduation. Subsequently, she pursued a J.D. in law from the NYU School of Law. Following her legal education, she entered the fields of law and politics, initially engaging in corporate litigation for Cahill Gordon & Reindel in New York. During her time in the city, she contributed to President Barack Obama’s Finance Committee and co-founded Gen44, the under-40 fundraising arm of the Obama campaign. Additionally, she worked in fundraising for pro-choice political candidates.
In 2012, she relocated to Seattle with her then-boyfriend and now-husband, Carleton Phillip Nelson, who worked in Amazon.com’s real estate acquisitions & development organization until his termination in May 2019. In 2017, Nelson, alongside social worker Kim Peltola, co-founded The Riveter. Securing $700,000 in seed capital, she opened The Riveter’s first office in Seattle in May of that year. The naming of The Riveter pays homage to Rosie the Riveter, the iconic symbol of female factory workers during World War II. The Riveter is an organization designed to offer workspace and additional services to support women in the workforce. Additionally, she co-hosts the podcast “What’s Her Story With Sam & Amy,” focusing on conversations with accomplished women from various fields. She serves as the co-host of the podcast “What’s Her Story With Sam & Amy,” alongside fellow entrepreneur Samantha Ettus.
The podcast is dedicated to interviewing accomplished women in various fields, showcasing their stories and insights.
