Amor Towles Biography

Amor Towles is an American novelist. He is best known for his bestselling novels Rules of Civility (2011), A Gentleman in Moscow (2016), and The Lincoln Highway (2021).

Amor Towles Career

Following his graduation from Yale University, Towles received a two-year fellowship from the Yale-China Association to teach in China. But because of the 1989 crackdown in Tiananmen Square, this was suddenly canceled. He was the director of research and an investment manager at Select Equity Group in New York from 1991 to 2012. As a young man, Towles attributed his main source of inspiration for writing novels to the well-known novelist and nature writer Peter Matthiessen, who was also one of the founders of The Paris Review. Towles’s first book, Rules of Civility, became so successful beyond his wildest dreams that the money he made from the book allowed him to leave investment banking and devote all of his time to writing.

A Gentleman in Moscow, his second book, became a finalist for the 2016 Kirkus Prize for Fiction and spent 59 weeks on the New York Times hardcover bestseller list. Additionally, it made the 2018 International Dublin Literary Award longlist. Production on an Ewan McGregor-starring television series based on the book was set to start in late 2022. The Lincoln Highway, Towles’ third book, was released on October 5, 2021. Amazon selected it as the best book of 2021. It had been on the New York Times hardcover fiction bestseller list for 30 weeks as of May 15, 2022.
