Alexi Lalas Career

Lalas was a student at Bloomfield Hills, Michigan’s Cranbrook Kingswood School. He didn’t start playing soccer until he was eleven years old. However, by the time he was a senior in 1987, he had enough skill to win the 1987 Michigan High School Player of the Year award. He was captain of his high school hockey team, which won the state championship, in addition to playing soccer. Lalas was rated in 1987 for the Ontario Hockey League Midget draft, but he was not chosen in the end.

Lalas was a member of the men’s soccer team at Rutgers University from 1988 to 1991. He also tried out and participated in a few spring games as well as an indoor tournament in 1988. Lalas played for the Scarlet Knights during his four years at Rutgers. There, he advanced to the 1989 NCAA Final Four and the 1990 National Championship Game. In 1989 and 1990, Lalas became a third-team All-American. He was named to the first team of the 1991 All-American team and was a finalist for the Missouri Athletic Club Player of the Year award as well as the Hermann Trophy. Lalas played hockey in college, just as he had in high school, and led the team in scoring in 1989.

Lalas became interested in completing his degree but left Rutgers in 1991 to concentrate on the U.S. national team. In 2013, he went back to school because Rutgers started providing enough online courses for Lalas to graduate. Lalas completed what he jokingly referred to as “a 26-year plan” in 10 months with 12 classes and 36 credits. In May 2014, he received a bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in music. Lalas worked out in California with former Arsenal player Bob McNab following his time in college and the 1992 Summer Olympics. This resulted in an Arsenal trial in the winter of 1992. Lalas did not possess the qualities to be on the first team, and that much was quickly established.

Thus, Lalas’s time with the Reserve team was limited to a few training sessions before he was cut soon after arriving in North London. After that, Lalas went back to Detroit and hesitated for a month about playing soccer again until coach Bora Milutinovic extended an invitation for him to participate in the US tryouts in Mission Viejo, California. Lalas became the lead studio analyst for the FIFA World Cup RussiaTM 2018, offering comprehensive analysis from FOX Sports’ cutting-edge studio located in the famous Red Square of Moscow. Lalas was a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic Team, the 1998 World Cup squad, and most notably, the 1994 World Cup squad where he was a standout defender for the U.S. Men’s National Team (U.S. MNT).

Before joining Padova in the Serie A, the top division in Italy, he was the first American player to play in the league. In 1996, the MLS was formed. Lalas, who became among the first players signed by Major League Soccer, started out with the New England Revolution. He later played for the Los Angeles Galaxy, Kansas City Wizards, and MetroStars. He won the MLS Cup in 2002, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, and the Concacaf Champions Cup with the LA Galaxy, where he experienced most of his on-field success.

In addition, he was selected four times for the Mid-Atlantic Region and was named to three Atlantic 10 All-Conference teams.

The Scarlet Knights finished 71-15-8 overall during his tenure “On The Banks,” winning the Atlantic 10 in 1990 and 1991.
