Alex Wagner is an American anchor and host working for MSNBC as an anchor of Primetime, Tuesday through Friday at 9 p.m. ET and host of Alex Wagner Tonight. She joined the MSNBC news team in 2000, after previously working for CBS.
Wagner attended Woodrow Wilson High School, which was renamed Jackson-Reed in 2022. She graduated from Brown University in 1999, majoring in art history and literature. She has had a diverse career in media and advocacy. She served as the cultural correspondent for the Center for American Progress and later became the editor-in-chief of The Fader magazine from 2003 to 2007. Here, she covered global music and cultural movements. Additionally, she also worked as the executive director of the Not On Our Watch Project, focusing on mass atrocities and human rights violations. Transitioning into political journalism, she became the White House correspondent for Politics Daily, later moving to The Huffington Post after its acquisition by AOL. As an analyst on MSNBC, she appeared on shows like Countdown with Keith Olbermann and The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.
On November 14, 2011, she began hosting “Now with Alex Wagner” on MSNBC, initially airing at noon ET and later at 4 PM ET. The show was canceled on July 30, 2015, as part of MSNBC’s shift towards more breaking news reporting. Although plans for a weekend program were initially announced, they were later abandoned. In April 2016, she left MSNBC and joined The Atlantic as a senior editor, contributing to the magazine’s content and moderating events. Later in 2016, she replaced Vinita Nair on CBS This Morning Saturday. On March 17, 2018, she left CBS This Morning Saturday to co-host “The Circus” for Showtime. In 2020, she launched a podcast addressing the COVID-19 pandemic with Crooked Media and Cadence13. In August 2022, she began hosting “Alex Wagner Tonight” on MSNBC, taking over the 9 PM slots from Tuesdays through Fridays.
