Alex Cohen is an American Emmy Award-winning anchor and reporter working for Spectrum News 1 as an anchor and host. She joined the Spectrum News 1 news team in September 2018, after previously working for KPCC.

Cohen attended Interlochen Arts Academy and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and Religious Studies from Brown University and a Master’s degree in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. In Washington, D.C., Cohen started her radio career as a producer and director for Weekend All Things Considered and Weekly Edition on National Public Radio. She was employed at San Francisco’s KQED from 2000 to 2003.

Cohen began as a producer for the statewide radio program California Report and later served as the program’s Los Angeles bureau chief. Additionally, Cohen has hosted the weekly APM program Weekend America and reported for “Marketplace”, the financial news show of American Public Media. After moving to KPCC radio in Pasadena, California, she worked as a reporter and host for NPR’s daily news program, “Day to Day”. Before taking on the role of co-host of the 9–11 am morning show, “Take Two,” Cohen worked as a reporter and afternoon anchor for “All Things Considered” from 2009 until 2012.

Cohen joined Spectrum Cable’s Southern California all-news channel in September 2018 as a morning news anchor and host. Furthermore, Cohen is the host of the hour-long political program “Inside the Issues”, alongside Pomona College Professor Sara Sadhwani. She received an Emmy Award for his work on the Spectrum News show “Under the Gun” in July 2020, the Golden Mike Award for Best Live Coverage of a News Story, and the LA Press Club Award for Best Anchor. In addition, Cohen skated as “Smother Theresa” for the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls and as “Axles of Evil” for the Los Angeles Derby Dolls between 2003 and 2010. She was brought on board to work on the 2009 roller derby movie Whip It, which was directed by Drew Barrymore. Cohen also co-wrote an insider’s guide to roller derby called Down and Derby, published in 2010.
