Alex Avila is an American former professional baseball catcher working for MLB Network as a studio analyst during the 2021 Postseason. He joined the MLB news team in 2021, after previously working with Detroit Tigers.

Avila began his baseball journey at Archbishop McCarthy High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he played prep baseball. In the 2005 MLB Draft, he was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 34th round but opted to attend the University of Alabama. He earned All-SEC honors during his time at Alabama. In the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft, he was drafted by the Tigers in the fifth round after a standout junior year with a .343 batting average, 17 home runs, and 62 RBIs.
His major league debut with the Tigers took place in August 2009 against the Baltimore Orioles, where he showcased his skills with two hits, a run scored, and an RBI. He secured a spot on the Tigers’ Opening Day roster in 2010, and he was recognized as the sixth-best prospect in the Tigers’ organization.
By 2011, he had become the Tigers’ starting catcher and displayed significant improvement. Over his MLB career, he amassed 714 hits, 352 runs, 297 RBIs, 155 doubles, and 105 home runs in 1,052 games. He was honored with the Silver Slugger award as a catcher, posting impressive statistics in hits, RBIs, doubles, and home runs during a career-high 141 games.
Known as “The Titanium Catcher” due to his perceived likelihood of being hit by foul tips, he signed a one-year contract with the Washington Nationals on January 28, 2021. Unfortunately, he announced his retirement from baseball on September 19, 2021, concluding a 13-year MLB career.
