Harvey Leonard Biography
Harvey Leonard is an American meteorologist workinf for WCVB-TV as the chief meteorologist emeritus. He joined the WCVB-TV StormTeam 5 team in 2002, and left the station for his retirement in May 2022.
Harvey Leonard Career
Leonard took up his current position as chief meteorologist emeritus after leaving the WCVB team in May 2022. In his position, he provides the community with vital information as a periodic contributor to StormTeam 5 coverage. When he joined WCVB, he served as a co-chief meteorologist alongside Dick Albert who also retired in 2009. Before joine the WCVB storm team, Harvey worked at WHDH in Boston where he served as the chief meteorologist for 25 years. In addition, Leonard also worked for WPRI in Providence, RI where he was the chief meteorologist and he started his forecasting career at Universal Weather Services, Inc.
Over the years, Leonard has received many awards and he is widely regarded as The Dean of Boston Meteorologists. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) Boston/New England Chapter choose Harvey for the induction into the prestigious 2021 Gold Circle that honored his 50 years of contribution to the industry. In addition, he was named by the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association (MBA) as the Broadcaster of the Year in 2019.
Furthermore, Harvey was inducted into the 2018 Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame, which is an honor given to people who have achieved outstanding performance and contributed greatly to the broadcasting industry in Massachusetts. He was also honored with the prestigious Governor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement during the 2016 Boston/New England Emmys. In addition, Leonard was voted for the 2015 by Boston Magazine “Best Weatherperson” in the People’s Choice category. In previous years, he was voted by the Improper Bostonian as the Hub’s “favorite forecaster.”
For his over 25 years of broadcast, the Silver Circle Award from NATAS Boston/NE recognized him in 2013. The Outstanding Service Award by a Broadcast Meteorologist was presented to him by the American Meteorologist Society which he is a member. Over the years Harvey has also been an active member of the community and he is involved in many local organisations such as the Huntington’s Disease Society of America while he takes part in it annyak fundraisers. He is also an honored guest speaker at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and at Harvard Business School.
In addition, Leonard attended the City College of New York where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology. He also attended New York University where he graduated with a Master of Science degree in meteorology. Furthermore, he also serves a meteorology lecturer at New York University. During his spare time, he enjoys playing tennis, and hiking trails around Woods Hole and Walden Pond.
