Michael Vick is an American retired football quarterback who participated in the National Football League (NFL) for a span of 13 seasons. He joined the FOX Sports news team in 2000, for FOX NFL KICKOFF, FOX’s one-hour NFL pregame show airing on Sundays during the NFL season.

Vick gained early recognition during his time at Homer L. Ferguson High School in Newport News. Displaying impressive athletic abilities as a freshman, he notably threw for over 400 yards in a single game. However, Ferguson High School closed in 1996 as part of a Newport News Public Schools modernization program. Subsequently, Vick, along with coach Tommy Reamon, relocated to Warwick High School during his sophomore year. He served as a three-year starter for the Warwick Raiders under Coach Reamon’s guidance. During this time, he accumulated impressive stats, passing for 4,846 yards with 43 touchdowns and adding 1,048 yards with 18 scores on the ground. In his senior year, he contributed 1,668 passing yards and accounted for 10 passing and rushing touchdowns. In a standout game, he achieved six rushing touchdowns and three passing touchdowns.
Coach Reamon, who had previously assisted another athlete, Michael Brooks, in transitioning from Newport News to the University of Virginia, provided support to Vick in his SAT preparation. He assisted him and his family in choosing between Syracuse University and Virginia Tech. Ultimately, Reamon favored Virginia Tech, where he believed that Frank Beamer’s coaching would offer valuable guidance. Beamer also promised to redshirt Vick, allowing him the necessary time for development. Convinced by the proximity to family and friends, he decided to attend Virginia Tech. As he left the Newport News public housing projects in 1998 with a college football scholarship, he was regarded as a success story in the local community. Vick entered the NFL as the first overall pick in 2001 with the Atlanta Falcons, making a significant impact on the game and the league. His unique style and skills redefined the quarterback position, setting a new standard for future generations.
During his six-year tenure with the Falcons, he earned three Pro Bowl selections (2002, 2004, and 2005) and led the team to two playoff appearances, reaching the NFC Championship in 2004. Raising over $80,000 to support the foundation’s initiatives. The Michael Vick Foundation’s 2006 federal tax return revealed contributions such as providing 100 backpacks to underprivileged children in Newport News and funding an after-school program. In response to the tragic Virginia Tech massacre on April 16, 2007, he and the United Way jointly donated $10,000 to assist the affected families.
The Vick Foundation also collected donations from communities in Atlanta and Virginia, directing the funds to the United In Caring Fund for Victims of the Virginia Tech Tragedy and a special fund at the United Way of Montgomery, Radford, and Floyd counties, serving the Virginia Tech area. These donations were intended to support various needs, including funeral expenses, transportation for family members, and other essential support services.
