Julian Edelman is an American former wide receiver in the (NFL) National Football League, he spent 12 seasons playing for the New England Patriots. He joined Fox Sports as a FOX NFL kickoff analyst in 2023.

Julian Edelman Career

Edelman engaged in varsity football and baseball during his time at Woodside High School in Woodside, California. In his freshman year, he was notably undersized, weighing less than 100 pounds before experiencing a growth spurt. Despite his initial stature, he served as the quarterback for the high school team. In his senior year, he played a pivotal role in leading the Wildcats to an impressive 13–0 record in 2004. Throughout his high school career, he demonstrated his skills by amassing 2,237 yards and 29 touchdowns through passing, along with 964 yards and 13 touchdowns through rushing. Following his graduation, he spent a year at the College of San Mateo, where he achieved notable success. He threw for 1,312 yards and 14 touchdowns.

This was while also setting a school record with 1,253 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns. Afterward, he transferred to Kent State University, where he pursued a major in business management. During his tenure at Kent State, he served as the starting quarterback for three years. In his senior year, he played a dual role as the Golden Flashes’ leading passer and rusher. He completed 56% of his passes, throwing for 1,820 yards with 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. On the ground, he gained 1,370 yards through 215 attempts, averaging an impressive 6.4 yards per carry and scoring 13 touchdowns. His outstanding performance in total offense surpassed Joshua Cribbs’s single-season school record set in 2003. Edelman was chosen in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. After joining the Patriots, he shifted his position to become a return specialist and wide receiver.

He emerged as a key offensive starter in 2013 and remained a significant part of the Patriots’ receiving corps until his retirement at the conclusion of the 2020 season. Despite never receiving a Pro Bowl selection, he distinguished himself as one of the NFL’s most productive postseason receivers. He currently holds the third-highest rankings in postseason receiving yards and receptions, and he holds Super Bowl records for punt returns and first-half receptions in a single game. With three Super Bowl victories to his name, Edelman was the leading receiver in terms of yards during his triumphs in Super Bowl XLIX and Super Bowl LIII. Notably, he was named the MVP of the latter, contributing to over half of his team’s receiving yards. He officially announced his retirement on April 12, 2021, concluding a remarkable 12-season career with the New England Patriots.

The decision followed the Patriots terminating his contract due to a failed physical examination. In response to his retirement, Bill Belichick commended his competitiveness, mental and physical toughness, and versatile skills, hailing him as the “quintessential throwback player.” Belichick expressed the privilege of coaching him. Team owner Robert Kraft, in his statement, lauded Edelman as “one of the great success stories in our franchise’s history.” On social media, former teammate Tom Brady expressed his admiration for Edelman as both a player and a friend, while Cam Newton noted that Edelman would be missed. Following his retirement, he participated in a series of podcast interviews, including appearances on Pardon My Take and Green Light with Chris Long, his teammate during the 2016 season.

Shortly after leaving the NFL, he announced his venture into a media career and revealed his involvement with the cast of Inside the NFL on Paramount+. Despite speculations suggesting a potential return to the NFL, particularly to play alongside former Patriots quarterback Tom Brady on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he refuted the rumors, affirming his loyalty as a “one-team guy.” His retirement reignited discussions about his potential induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, a topic that had surfaced earlier after his MVP performance in Super Bowl LIII. Critics point to his lack of Pro Bowl nominations and traditional metrics used to evaluate NFL careers. On the other hand, proponents highlight his integral roles in three Super Bowl victories with the Patriots and his second-place standing in postseason receptions and receiving yards.

His impersonation of his former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick during an episode of the “New Heights” podcast became an internet sensation. It garnered millions of views after being shared by major sports networks in the United States. In 2019, Edelman, in collaboration with ad executive Assaf Swissa, co-founded a production company named Coast Productions. Their inaugural project was the Showtime documentary titled “100%” in 2019. The documentary focused on Edelman’s recovery from a 2017 ACL tear and provided insights into the 2018 NFL season. Following his retirement in April 2021, ViacomCBS inked a multi-year development deal with Coast Productions. As part of the agreement, he took on the role of an analyst for Inside the NFL, which transitioned to Paramount+. The move marked his foray into the world of sports analysis.
