Richard Sherman is an American former football cornerback who played 11 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He joined the FOX Sports news team in August 2023 as a co-host of “UNDISPUTED.”

Sherman attended Dominguez High School in Compton, California, and graduated in 2006. He excelled as a scholar-athlete, earning the position of salutatorian (ranked second) in his graduating class with a 4.2 GPA. Additionally, he was a standout athlete, excelling in both football and track and field. In his senior year in 2005, he demonstrated his versatility and skill on the football field by contributing to 1,030 all-purpose yards. This included 870 yards on 28 catches and three punt returns for touchdowns. Additionally, he showcased his defensive abilities as a defensive back, recording 45 tackles, eight pass breakups, and one interception. His outstanding performances played a pivotal role in Dominguez High School’s success, leading them to a CIF Southern Section Division III title with a convincing 41–14 victory over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame High School in the championship game.
As a member of the school’s track team, he continued to showcase his athleticism. He earned the title of a USA Today All-American by winning the California state title in the triple jump with an impressive mark of 15.44 meters. In the 110-meter hurdles, he reached the finals of the state meet, securing a third-place finish with a time of 13.99 seconds. Furthermore, he also displayed his prowess in the long jump, where he finished sixth with a mark of 7.25 meters. In the 100 meters, he recorded a time of 10.77 seconds, further highlighting his speed and agility on the track. After high school, Sherman continued his academic journey at Stanford University, where he graduated in 2010 with an undergraduate degree in communications. He was not only dedicated to his studies but also involved in extracurricular activities, as evidenced by his membership in the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity. Sherman furthered his education by working towards a master’s degree during a fifth year, utilizing his final year of eligibility.
Initially committing to UCLA, Sherman later received an athletic scholarship to attend Stanford University. Here, he played for the Stanford Cardinal football team from 2006 to 2010, under the guidance of head coaches Walt Harris and Jim Harbaugh. He started his collegiate career at Stanford as a wide receiver and made an immediate impact, leading the Cardinal in receiving during his freshman year in 2006. For his contributions, he received an honorable mention to the Freshman All-American Team by Sporting News. During the 2006 season, he recorded 34 receptions for 581 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns. He continued to be a key player over the next two years, catching 47 passes before an unfortunate season-ending knee injury occurred after playing in the first four games of the 2008 season. Consequently, 2008 became a redshirt year for Sherman. Following his injury, he requested a position switch to cornerback, a move that proved successful.
In his final two years at Stanford, he made a significant impact with 112 tackles and six interceptions. He was part of the 2010 Stanford Cardinal team that achieved a remarkable 12–1 record, establishing a school record. On January 29, 2011, he played in the 2011 Senior Bowl as part of Marvin Lewis’ North team. Despite the North team losing 24–10 to the South, he showcased his skills by deflecting two passes. He had been added as a late replacement after Curtis Marsh Jr. sustained a hamstring injury during the first day of practice. His performance at the Senior Bowl was well-received and was anticipated to elevate his draft stock. Subsequently, he participated in the NFL Scouting Combine, completing all combine and positional drills. On March 17, 2011, he attended Stanford’s pro day to further demonstrate his abilities. His pre-draft projections varied, with expectations of being selected anywhere from the fourth to sixth rounds by most NFL draft experts and scouts.
The Sporting News projected him as a second-round pick, while Fox Sports’ Peter Schrager anticipated him to be a fifth-round pick. During the 2021 NFL season, he faced challenges with injuries, including a calf injury during pregame warm-ups before the Week 10 game against the Washington Football Team. This led to him missing the game and being placed on injured reserve three days later. Despite this setback, he was activated on December 10 and recorded his only interception of the season in the Week 14 game against the Buffalo Bills. Unfortunately, he returned to injured reserve on January 11, 2022, with an Achilles injury, concluding his season. Consequently, he finished the season playing in just five games with three starts, contributing 11 tackles, a pass deflection, and one interception. On June 14, 2022, it was announced that he would become a pre-game and postgame analyst for Amazon. He also appeared on the FOX show “Stars on Mars” alongside his former teammate Marshawn Lynch, which aired on June 5, 2023.
In August 2023, it was reported that he would be replacing Shannon Sharpe as Skip Bayless’s co-host on the sports debate show “Undisputed.” He made his debut on “Undisputed” on August 28, 2023. He gained widespread recognition in the NFL due to his outspoken personality, penchant for making significant plays, and frequent trash-talk, making him one of the most well-known players of his era. In January 2014, he drew national attention with a post-game interview following the 2013 NFC Championship game, where his tipped pass secured a victory for the Seattle Seahawks over the San Francisco 49ers. In the interview, he proclaimed himself the “best corner in the game” and referred to San Francisco wide receiver Michael Crabtree, the intended recipient of the decisive pass, as a “sorry” receiver. Moreover, he even graced the cover of Madden NFL 15, further solidifying his prominence.

Furthermore, he is involved in philanthropy through his charity, Blanket Coverage – The Richard Sherman Family Foundation, established in 2013. However, the felony charge was later dropped, and he faced five misdemeanor charges including second-degree criminal trespass. In addition to that, third-degree malicious mischief, resisting arrest, driving under the influence, and reckless endangerment of roadway workers, all with a domestic violence designation. During his arrest, he required stitches on his ankle due to a police dog being deployed. After being treated at a hospital, he was booked into the King County Correctional Facility in Seattle. Initially denied bail, he was released on his own recognizance on July 15, 2021. The NFL activated its emergency Domestic Violence protocols, launching an investigation into the matter to determine appropriate discipline for Sherman.
In a plea bargain in March 2022, he pleaded guilty to first-degree negligent driving, second-degree criminal trespass, and speeding in a roadway construction zone. He received court supervision for up to two years, was ordered to pay $2,500 in court fees, and performed 16 hours of community service along with a DUI course. Additionally, he was mandated to pay restitution to his father-in-law and the Department of Transportation, with the specific amounts to be determined later. Importantly, he avoided further jail time through this agreement.
