Brzezinski began her educational journey at the Madeira School. She later spent two years at Georgetown University before transferring to Williams College. In 1989, she successfully earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Williams College. She embarked on her journalism career as an assistant at ABC’s World News This Morning in 1990. Following this, she joined the Tribune-owned Fox affiliate WTIC-TV/WTIC-DT in Hartford, Connecticut. Here, she initially served as an assignment and features editor before progressing to the role of a general assignments reporter. In 1992, she transitioned to CBS affiliate WFSB-TV/WFSB-DT in Hartford, where her career swiftly advanced, culminating in her appointment as the weekday morning anchor in 1995. Taking a brief hiatus from CBS News in 2001, she contributed to MSNBC’s weekday afternoon show, HomePage, alongside co-anchors Gina Gaston and Ashleigh Banfield. The trio was playfully dubbed “the Powerpuff Girls of journalism” by Entertainment Weekly during this period. Brzezinski re-entered the CBS News fold as a desk correspondent in September 2001. This was a crucial time that made her a prominent “Ground Zero” reporter during the September 11, 2001 attacks. Her live broadcasts from the scene, including the moment when the South Tower collapsed, thrust her into the limelight. During her tenure at CBS News, she held various roles, including correspondent, substitute anchor, and segment anchor for both breaking news and routine updates. She occasionally contributed to CBS Sunday Morning and 60 Minutes.
Later on, she returned to MSNBC on January 26, 2007, initially providing “Up to the Minute” news updates in the evening. She made the decision to resign from both shows on the eve of a renewal option, citing her selection by Joe Scarborough to co-host Morning Joe. Since the inception of Morning Joe, she has been a consistent presence as co-host and news reader alongside Joe Scarborough and Willie Geist on MSNBC’s morning program. Additionally, she earned a place in the inaugural 2021 Forbes 50 Over 50, a list recognizing entrepreneurs, leaders, scientists, and creators who are over the age of 50. Moreover, in August 2022, SWPS University awarded her an honorary doctorate.
She has authored several books, including her memoir “All Things at Once,” published in January 2010, which chronicles her professional journey, emphasizing the ups and downs of her career. “Knowing Your Value: Women, Money and Getting What You’re Worth,” published in 2011 and later revised as “Know Your Value” in 2018, addresses women and financial negotiations, offering tips on salary and compensation negotiations. In 2012, she published “Obsessed: America’s Food Addiction and My Own.” In 2021, Forbes collaborated with Brzezinski and her “Know Your Value” initiative to spotlight 50 diverse women over 50 who achieved significant success later in life, often overcoming formidable odds or barriers.
