In 2002, when Palestinian suicide bombers began a coordinated attack on Israel, Vause was there. He was also in the middle of the Israeli military campaign that followed and in Bethlehem during the 39-day lockdown of the Church of the Nativity. In 2003, the Atlanta Press Club gave him the “Journalist of the Year” award for his coverage of these events.
When a U.S. bombing killed Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, in 2006, Vause was the only reporter from outside of the U.S. who went to the scene. Before the U.S.-led invasion, he traveled through Iraq for months. Unlike many reporters, he wasn’t embedded with coalition troops; instead, he was one of three CNN International anchors based in Kuwait in the months before the invasion. He went to Pakistan and then Afghanistan to cover the fall of the Taliban. He was one of the few reporters who covered the attacks from New York.
Vause has been to many important events, including the inauguration of a new president, the events that led to the impeachment of Bill Clinton, the death of John F. Kennedy, Jr., school shootings, and big awards shows like the Grammys and the Oscars.
