Chris Gailus Accused of Sexual Harassment

Gailus, co-anchor of Global BC’s News Hour at 6, has been accused of sexually harassing his former makeup artist, as per documents filed with the Canadian Human Rights Commission. Dawne Koke, the makeup artist, alleges that he made inappropriate comments and gestures over a seven-year period. Among the claims are instances of Gailus grabbing her backside at a work party, making suggestive comments, and pretending to get excited while she applied his makeup. While Koke sent an email in 2013 asking him to stop the comments, he responded, considering them as jokes. Koke later raised the issue with management, alleging that Shaw Communications, Global’s parent company, failed to properly investigate her complaint.

Global BC, in a statement, claimed the allegation against Gailus was “unfounded,” stating a zero-tolerance approach and immediate investigation. However, Koke asserts she was unable to return to work and was fired last year. Shaw stated it was inconclusive whether Gailus sexually harassed Koke but acknowledged inappropriate behavior, issuing a warning. The Canadian Human Rights Commission did not hear the case, suggesting it should be addressed by the company’s union first. Koke is appealing this decision to the Federal Court, arguing that it sends the wrong message and undermines the reporting process for harassment cases.
