McShane completed his undergraduate studies at Fordham University in 1999, earning a bachelor’s degree in communication and media studies. His early involvement in sports reporting began during his time at Fordham, where he served as a sports broadcaster at WFUV from 1997 to 1999. In 1998, he gained valuable experience through an internship with the Yankees Radio Network. Additionally, he worked as a play-by-play commentator for WBRK, covering games for the Pittsfield Mets. Following his graduation from Fordham, he initially intended to pursue a career as a sports commentator. However, in 1999, he took on the role of a desk assistant at Bloomberg Radio.

This marked the beginning of his career in news reporting, as he became a local news reporter in New York City in 2000. One of his early significant assignments was covering the September 11 attacks for WBBR. While at Bloomberg Radio, he underwent a transition into the realm of business reporting. He reported live from the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange and later assumed the role of co-anchor for the syndicated morning show “The First Word” with Peter Schacknow. His journey at Bloomberg continued as he moved on to Bloomberg Television, where he anchored shows such as “On the Markets,” “Evening Edition,” and “Marketweek.”

He became a part of Fox Business as a business reporter when it launched in 2007. His role expanded in 2008 when he was promoted to co-anchor the network’s early morning program alongside Jenna Lee. In 2009, he joined Don Imus’ “Imus in the Morning” as one of the business reporters when Fox began simulcasting the program. Later, he took on the position of news anchor on the show from May 9, 2011, until 2017. In 2010, he began co-hosting the 11 a.m. program “Markets Now” on Fox Business Network alongside Dagen McDowell. He also showcased his versatility as a radio play-by-play broadcaster for ESPN’s coverage of the 2013 Pinstripe Bowl. From 2018 to 2021, he co-anchored “After the Bell” with Melissa Francis.

During this period, he reported live from swing states during the 2020 US presidential election. He announced his departure from Fox Business Network on May 8, 2023. Subsequently, on September 12, 2023, Nexstar Media Group revealed that he would be joining NewsNation as the weekday afternoon anchor for NewsNation Now. He made his debut on September 25, 2023.
