Peter Overton is an Australian Television Journalist and News Presenter working for 9News as a presenter for Nine News Sydney from Sunday to Thursday at 6 pm. He joined the 9news team in 1991, after previously working for Sky Channel.
Peter Overton Career
In January 2009, Overton was promoted to chief newsreader for Nine News’ Sydney 6 p.m. show. After working as a correspondent for 60 Minutes for eight years, Overton came back to the Nine newsroom. Overton worked as a reporter and frequent presenter at Nine News for ten years before joining 60 Minutes. He graduated from Macquarie University with a Bachelor of Economics after attending North Sydney Boys High School.
His first taste of the media came while he was still an undergraduate when he worked as an intern at Sydney radio station 2UE in 1985 before moving up to an on-air position. Until 1987, when he relocated to Australia’s first satellite television network, Sky Channel, where he spent four years reporting and presenting, Overton kept up this job.
Overton began working for Channel Nine in Sydney in 1991, where he covered sports for National Nine News. Alongside Tracy Grimshaw, he co-anchored Channel Nine’s coverage of the Thredbo disaster from the Sydney studios. Major Super League ARL court decisions were also grounded by him. As the host of Nine’s main evening newscast, Peter has witnessed the fiercely competitive 6 p.m. newscast become the top-ranked in Sydney in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015.
The highest accolade for this was a 2012 TV Week Logie Award for Most Outstanding News Coverage of the Queensland Floods, which was given to TODAY, ACA, and News together. For the Nine News team’s Most Outstanding News Coverage of the Blue Mountains bushfires in 2014, Peter accepted another Logie Award. Peter still contributes special reports to 60 Minutes and is the host of the show’s weekly feedback segment.
Peter feels very much a part of the community. He is a member of the Defence Reserves Support National Council, a co-patron of the Mental Health Council of Australia, an ambassador for the George Gregan Foundation, an ambassador for the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation, an ambassador for the Sony Foundation (teenage cancer), a national ambassador for Special Olympics Australia, and an ambassador for the Australian National Literacy Foundation. He also serves on the Defence Reserves Support National Council.
