Chernéy Amhara Biography
Chernéy Amhara is an American Emmy award-winning anchor working for NBC6 as a weekday reporter and weekend morning anchor. She can be seen on Saturdays at 6 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. and on Sundays at 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. Amhara joined the NBC 6 news team in February 2022.
Prior to joining the NBC6 news team, Amhara worked at WISN-12 News in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she served as a weekend anchor and reporter. While she worked at WISN-12 News, she covered a number of national stories such as; the Waukesha Christmas Parade Tragedy, unrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, the police shooting of Jacob Blake, and the Milwaukee Bucks Championship run. In addition, Chernéy also assisted in founding Wisconsin’s first chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists where she diversified local newsrooms.
Furthermore, Amhara has also previously worked in Las Vegas and while she was there, she covered; the Las Vegas Raiders move, the high-profile trial of David Copperfield, and the Las Vegas mass shooting tragedy. For her in-depth coverage of Las Vegas gang culture, Chernéy won an Emmy award. Amhara attended California State University, Northridge where she studied at the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media and Communication and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and emphasis in Spanish-language journalism.
After having graduated, Amhara began her career working for stations in Los Angeles, California, and Charlottesville, Virginia. She is from a multi-racial Caribbean family and the early years of her life were spent in St. Andrews Parish, Jamaica. She later relocated to California with her family during her childhood days. During her spare time, she enjoys traveling, cooking, and spending ample time with friends and family.
