Rick Mitchell is an American meteorologist working for NBC 5 as the chief meteorologist seen on weekday evenings at 5 pm, 6 pm, and 10 pm. He joined the NBC 5 news team in August 2012.
Before Mitchell joined the NBC 5 weather team, he worked at KOCO-TV, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where he served as the chief meteorologist from 1994. While he worked at KOCO-TV, he provided coverage of a number of the most intense storms such as; blizzards, several tornado outbreaks, wildfires, and floods. Prior to that, he worked at WOI-TV in Des Moines, Iowa where he served as a weather forecaster and at AccuWeather based in State College, Pennsylvania.
In addition, Rick attended the University of Nebraska where he earned a bachelor of science degree in meteorology. The American Meteorological Society awarded Mitchell with the CBM seal. The Associated Press and the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters recognized Mitchell for his severe weather forecasting experiences. Furthermore, together with the KOCO-TV meteorologists team, they were recognized for their coverage of the EF-5 tornado in May 1999 in Oklahoma City by the Oklahoma governor, Frank Keating,
