Brian Abel is an American Emmy award-winning anchor who is currently working at WXYZ. He serves as the evening anchor of 7 Action News at 5 and 7 Action News at 10 on TV20 Detroit Monday through Friday. Furthermore, he covers political stories for metro Detroit.

Over the year, he has had an exclusive interview with Vice President Mike Pence during impeachment hearings for President Trump. He also had 1-on-1 interviews with; Democrat Nominee Joe Biden, Senator Bernie Sanders, VP Nominee Kamala Harris, and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg during the 2020 presidential primary.
In addition, he has led many breaking news stories, including the plot to kidnap Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and spearheading coverage of the death of legacy Congressman John Conyers Jr. Furthermore, he was honored in 2020 with an Emmy award by the Michigan chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
He previously worked at KSHB in Kansas City where he served as a reporter. During his time at the station, he served as the lead reporter during the station’s coverage of the 2016 election and was twice nominated for an Emmy.
Furthermore, he has covered stories that have raised national attention such as; a triple shooting in an Olathe bar investigated as a hate crime, a Missouri bill to consider sex between legislators and lobbyists as a “gift,” a massive construction fire forcing the evacuation of an Overland Park neighborhood, the tragic death of a young boy on the nation’s tallest waterslide, and the death of two firefighters battling an arson fire.
Furthermore, he has also served as the primary anchor for WDAZ in Grand Forks and reported in the often-frozen tundra of Fargo, North Dakota for WDAY. The Grand Rapids suburb of Lowell is his native home. In addition, he attended Western Michigan University where he graduated with a degree in Journalism. During his spare time, he can be found on the golf course or at Michigan Stadium on game days in the fall.
