Pompeani was brought up in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, and he attended Point Park University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism in 1982. While working at KDKA-TV, he presented the “Extra Effort” award to students who excelled in academics, athletics, and community service. He has visited more than 1,200 local schools and he has produced feature stories on every student who outstood. In addition, Pompeani was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.

In a reader poll of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Pompeani was voted as Pittsburgh’s favorite sportscaster in 1997. He was the first man to receive the Pittsburgh Beauty Academy’s Professional Image Award in 1998. For his outstanding contributions to local golf, the Tri-State PGA of America Distinguished Service Award was presented to him in 2000. In addition, he was inducted into the local Tri-State PGA Golf Hall of Fame. In April 2007, Bob was inducted into the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame for his contributions to local sports.

Furthermore, Pompeani has been awarded the Golden Quill Award six times. He received the award for the first time for his report “Earning Their Stripes,” in 1987, and the second in 1988 for “Project Playoffs.” Not long ago, Bob received the award in 2013, for his Pittsburgh Steeler exclusives. In addition, Pompeani won eight AP awards for play-by-play of Steeler Pre-Season games and three Mid-Atlantic Emmy awards. The National Father’s Day Council named Pompeani as the “Father of the Year” in 2011. For “Dancing With Pittsburgh Celebrities” Bob received a People’s Choice Award in 2012.

In addition, Pompeani was awarded by the Syria Shriners of Pittsburgh in 2015, with a lifetime achievement award. He is on the board of directors of the; Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Partners for Quality Inc., the American Heart Association, and the Give the Kids the World Foundation. Since 1995, Bob has been on the Executive Committee for the Mario Lemieux Foundation. Furthermore, for the last 18 years, Pompeani has served as an emcee for the “Penguins at Your Service” annual black-tie dinner. During his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family and playing golf.
