Ellen Leyva is an American anchor working for ABC 7 as the co-anchor of the 4 pm and 8 pm newscasts alongside David Ono. She joined ABC 7 News team in 1995, as a health reporter and anchor of a number of newscasts, including morning and midday.
Tucson, Arizona is Leyva’s native home and she was brought up in a bilingual household. Being bilingual has been of great help in her job in the large Hispanic communities of Los Angeles and Phoenix. She attended Arizona State University where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast journalism. In the year 2006, Ellen was inducted into the Walter Cronkite School of Broadcast Journalism’s Hall of Fame. The National Hispanic Media Coalition awarded Leyva an Impact Award for Excellence in Television.
In addition, while Ellen has been serving as a broadcast journalist, she has had many opportunities such as co-hosting the Oscars red carpet arrivals with Roger Ebert, flying with the Blue Angels, and standing in the OR with Dr. Oz as he performed a double-bypass. A number of causes she is involved with include; being the ABC7 team leader for AIDS Walk Los Angeles, giving her time to Pacific Clinics as regularly needed, and advocating for mental health services for underserved communities.
